Maya Izquierdo has always loved cooking, and she has also always loved working for herself. Two years ago Izquierdo combined those passions into a cupcake business, and on November 15th she’ll be hosting a grand opening of her own brick and mortar location named Zalie Cakes at 2029 Harrison Street, Bay #5 in Downtown Hollywood.
Zalie Cakes is vegan bakery that uses sugar and flour, but does not use butter, eggs, dairy, or milk. It didn’t start out that way. The decision to become vegan was the result of listening to customer requests.
“A lot of people can’t have dairy or eggs, and my customers started asking for vegan products more and more often. That’s how it progressed, and a lot of our customers aren’t even vegan, they just like the taste of our cakes!” Izquierdo said. “Our tagline is ‘OMG, They’re Vegan!”
The cake product line currently features 15 unique flavors with the three most popular being Red Velvet, FunFetti, and Cookie Monster. They also feature cookies and custom cakes for any occasion.
In addition to the bakery, Izquierdo plans to create a new country market at Zalie Cakes. The market will act as a place for other local dealers to sell their wares, such as loose teas, soaps, oils and salts. It will also to have a small cafe area.
“We’re so excited!” said Izquierdo, “because it’s also an opportunity to support other small businesses, and we’re very passionate about that, because that’s who we are. I’ve always been surrounded by it, and I believe that when you support a small business, if you can help propel another business, you’re supporting the whole community.”
When asked why she chose to open Zalie Cakes in Downtown Hollywood, Izquierdo responded, "I wanted to open a store for a long time, and I always liked Downtown Hollywood. It’s a growing community and a great environment.”
Zalie Cakes grand opening hours will be from 9 am until 7 pm on Sunday, November 15th at 2029 Harrison Street. The grand opening will include buy-one-get-one-free specials on their signature small cakes, as well as for coffee.
