The Downtown Hollywood Mural Project’s (DHMP) latest outdoor art installation by David “DaveL” Lavernia is a tropical splendor.
The mural, which has stylized ocean waves, the sun, and tropical plants including bird of paradise, covers the front and side walls of 2040 Taylor Street. It is the DHMP’s first mural painted on a residential property.
The latest large-scale work of art’s virtual unveiling, featuring a question-and-answer session with the artist, will take place on February 20 at 6pm, and can be viewed via Facebook Live at www.facebook.com/FloridasHollywood.
“Jo and I had a great time painting in Downtown Hollywood!” said DaveL, a Cuban-American muralist, street artist, and painter based out of Coral Gables, Florida. Assisted by his wife Jomarys, the artist used spray paint to create his tropical-themed mural.
“We were able to speak with the community members throughout the mural process and learn about the neighborhood. It was really inspiring to listen to their reactions and engage in interesting conversations. We can’t wait to visit Downtown Hollywood again soon!”
Drawing from his South Florida and Caribbean roots, DaveL is influenced by color, nature, and animals, and frequently uses his platform to draw awareness to conservation efforts and animal advocacy. His work is exhibited in many parts of the country as well as abroad.
“I believe DaveL’s new mural will start a trend of Downtown Hollywood residential property owners choosing to have contemporary art on their exterior façades,” noted Jill C. Weisberg, DHMP Project Manager. “When a house like this has a gorgeous mural on it, it adds interest to the entire neighborhood.”
Launched in August 2012 by the Hollywood, Florida Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA), the DHMP’s mission is to beautify and add culture to the Downtown area, one wall at a time, transforming ordinary building façades into stunning works of art.
Free guided walking tours of the Downtown Hollywood Mural Project are typically offered at 6 pm during the Downtown Hollywood ArtWalk, held on the third Saturday of every month, however, tours are currently only offered virtually until further notice.
