Birds of a Feather Flock Together for a Good Cause in Downtown Hollywood

Downtown Hollywood has gotten "flocked" for the second year in a row.

A festive flock of more than 300 plastic pink flamingos sporting sparkly red bows suddenly appeared along a three-block stretch of Hollywood Boulevard in the early hours of Dec. 1, much to the surprise and delight of downtown visitors and business owners.

The iconic lawn ornaments were part of the Hollywood Women's Club's annual holiday fundraiser, Flocking Lawns Around Hollywood.

The Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) once again participated in the fundraising festivities by sponsoring the mass flocking, which was expanded this year beyond the Hollywood Boulevard median between Young Circle and 21st Avenue. Flamingos also could be found conspicuously congregating around large palm trees on the sidewalks on both sides of the boulevard.

Mickey Byrne's Irish Pub & Restaurant has joined in the downtown flocking festivities with a lighted front window display featuring the leading vote-getters in this year's annual Flamingo Decorating Contest as chosen by Facebook users. The Mickey Byrne's display will remain in place until Dec. 27, unlike other flockings where club volunteers stealthily place flocks on lawns before sunrise and whisk them away by nightfall.

"Braving the early morning dark, sprinklers and the giggles of anyone who sees us, flocking is a fun event that is doing good," said Carol Fitzgerald, president of the Hollywood Women's Club, which has raised more than $5,000 for its community service projects since the program's inception three years ago.

"One of the greatest joys of flocking is hearing about people's reactions," Fitzgerald added. "And the club's name and brand have risen as a result of flocking. We have recruited new members every year from being seen around town.

To arrange for a flock of 25 flamingos to appear in the front yard of a friend, relative, neighbor or business, call the Flocking Hotline at 954-609-6625. Flockings will continue through Dec. 23 and beyond, for special occasions.

The Hollywood Women's Club, part of the Greater Federation of Women's Clubs (GFWC), was founded in 1922. The 501(c)(3) tax-exempt, culturally diverse volunteer organization of more than 100 members is dedicated to community service and the support of local and international charitable organizations.
